CfA: KWI International Fellowships

We are pleased to announce the opening of applications for our ninth cohort of International Fellows at KWI. We invite qualified researchers to apply for a six-month stay, scheduled from 1 October 2024 to 31 March 2025. Applications must be submitted by 28 February 2024.

CfA: Writing Workshop

Intensive work on one's texts is integral to the humanities and social sciences. Especially for doctoral students who are not part of structured programmes, opportunities for supportive exchange can be rare. KWI is once again offering a weekend writing workshop for PhD students. Applications are due by 19 February 2024.

Blogbook & New Series  

Blogbook 2023

In December, the Blogbook 2023 was published in 150 numbered copies. Available in German and English editions with different texts, the book assembles a selection from the KWI blog throughout 2023. The Blogbook features a cross-section of contributions authored by KWI staff and fellows from the 2023 cohorts. Covering areas such as literary studies, (art) history, and sociology, the printed volume provides an opportunity to revisit popular content. Copies are available upon request from the KWI press, subject to availability.

New Blog Series “CLIMATE”

The new KWI blog series
CLIMATE is dedicated to the emerging genre of climate crisis/climate change literature. Curated by Laura M. Reiling, the series examines the phenomenon of climate (crisis) writing, which seems omnipresent in research and feuilletons, in novels, narratives, poems, plays, and essays. In the coming months, contributions will address topics such as the artistic imagination of the circumpolar north, global weirding, climate grief, and the devastation of the Harz region.

CULTURES OF THE CRYOSPHERE

Stefan Höhne Receives ERC Grant 

Along with an international team, KWI Senior Researcher Stefan Höhne has been awarded the Synergy Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for the project “Cultures of the Cryosphere: Infrastructures, Politics, and Futures of Artificial Cooling. The grant, secured in collaboration with the UDE, supports the project with nearly 10 million euros over six years. 
Through historical reconstruction, philosophical inquiry, and ethnographic studies, the project aims to investigate the impacts of artificial cold on modern societies, encouraging discussion on what a more fair and sustainable approach to this limited resource could look like.
Stefan Höhne is the first cultural studies researcher in Europe to be honoured with an ERC Synergy Grant.

Event Postponements

Please note: two events from our “More or Less|Mehr oder Weniger” series have been postponed. “Nähe und Distanz im Sachbuch”, a conversation with Steffen Mau and Ewald Frie (originally scheduled for 15 November) is rescheduled for 22 February 2024. The book presentation for “Welfare for Markets with Anton Jäger (Catholic University of Leuven) and Daniel Zamora (Free University of Brussels), initially planned for 28 November 2023, will now take place on 18 January 2024.

New DFG Project on Visual Languages of Influencers

A new DFG (German Research Foundation) project is launching at KWI with the title “Visual Languages of Influencers: A Visual Sociological Hermeneutic Exploration”, led by sociologist Hans-Georg Soeffner. Konstadinos Maras will explore the aesthetics of influencers, shaped by communalization processes and consolidation of social meanings. The three-year project scrutinizes influencers' YouTube videos and Instagram posts. Employing a sociological-hermeneutic approach, the goal is to uncover patterns in the visual landscape of digital influencer culture.

German Photo Book Prize

The German Photo Book Prize was awarded in November 2023 during the “Internationales Festival Fotografischer Bilder” (International Festival of Photographic Images) in Regensburg. The prize honours the photo book in twelve categories. This year, Luxembourgish photographer Marc Schroeder received the gold medal for his volume “Order 7161” in the documentary-journalistic category. Art historian Anja Schürmann, who researches artistic photo books at KWI, was on the jury and held the laudatory speech at the Regensburg municipal gallery Leerer Beutel.

Opening Meeting of the Comedy Network

In November, researchers gathered at KWI to establish a network for the exploration of humour. The international network brings together expertise from theater, film, art, and cultural studies, as well as philology, Judaic studies, and sociology. What unites the members is their understanding of humour as a complex and productive cultural technique. Under the name “Knowing Laughter: Cultural Techniques of Comedy”, the network has developed a collaborative work programme, featuring initial events set to take place during the winter semester of 2024/25.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS

Conference on the History of Sinti & Roma

On 9 November 2023, KWI faciliated a significant contribution to Sinti and Roma memory building, as well as cultural and historical recognition. The international conference, organized by Dezso Mate (Academy in Exile@KWI), brought together researchers, human rights defenders, cultural representatives, and policy makers. KWI Director Julika Griem and Academy in Exile Director Kader Konuk welcomed participants from a wide range of institutions. In his closing remarks, Mate noted: “Academic and public antigypsyism has a profound impact on Romani memory and remembrance of the Holocaust. Sinti and Roma people throughout history were categorized by antigypsy labels in the social sciences and public discourses.”

CineScience

“Darf’s ein bisschen mehr sein?”

During the winter semester of 2023/24, the KWI CineScience event series takes up the annual theme “More or Less|Mehr oder Wenigerfrom various perspectives. In collaboration with the Essen Filmstudio Glückauf, this successful series spans four evenings, posing the question: “Darf’s ein bisschen mehr sein?” (A Bit More, Perhaps?). Guests for these sessions include Herbert Schwaab, Ekkehard Knörer, Elena Meilicke, and Guido Kirsten.
