Along with an international team, KWI Senior Researcher Stefan Höhne has been awarded the Synergy Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for the project “Cultures of the Cryosphere: Infrastructures, Politics, and Futures of Artificial Cooling”. The grant, secured in collaboration with the UDE, supports the project with nearly 10 million euros over six years. Through historical reconstruction, philosophical inquiry, and ethnographic studies, the project aims to investigate the impacts of artificial cold on modern societies, encouraging discussion on what a more fair and sustainable approach to this limited resource could look like. Stefan Höhne is the first cultural studies researcher in Europe to be honoured with an ERC Synergy Grant.

Opening Meeting of the Comedy Network
In November, researchers gathered at KWI to establish a network for the exploration of humour. The international network brings together expertise from theater, film, art, and cultural studies, as well as philology, Judaic studies, and sociology. What unites the members is their understanding of humour as a complex and productive cultural technique. Under the name “Knowing Laughter: Cultural Techniques of Comedy”, the network has developed a collaborative work programme, featuring initial events set to take place during the winter semester of 2024/25.
