Frangis Spanta, coordinator of the AiE Afghanistan program, was on hand to welcome the many guests, and women's rights activist Momina Yari highlighted the importance of such exhibitions in raising awareness of the current oppression of women and girls in Afghanistan.

New DFG Project on Caring for People Living with Dementia

Professor emeritus Jo Reichertz has received DFG funding for a new project on caring for people living with dementia. The majority of people with dementia in Germany live in private households, and relatives caring for them quickly reach their limits. Many thus rely on live-in care workers, most of whom come from Eastern Europe. To date, little is known about the extent to which this arrangement actually helps the people living with dementia, or their relatives. Bringing together researchers from nursing studies and ethics at the University of Oldenburg and communication studies at KWI, the new DFG project aims to shed light on this situation.

The team is still looking for families to take part in the study: if interested, please contact Prof. Dr. Jo Reichertz (0151 4017 1790 – Jo. Reichertz@t-online.de).

ANNUAL THEME

More or Less

If insecurity is the signature of the present, “more or less” conveys a feeling of general uncertainty. On the one hand, images, information, catastrophes, and unforeseen events seem to be constantly multiplying. On the other hand, calls for decrease are growing louder and louder: degrowth, non-consumption, cancelling. The Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) Essen will explore this pendular movement and its consequences with the 2023/2024 theme “More or Less.”

NEW RELEASES

Canceln. Ein notwendiger Streit with a contribution by Hanna Engelmeier

No reasonable person wants to ban literature – right? This volume picks up the raging debate on “cancelling,” on the one hand a necessary step in the fight against discrimination and on the other a spectre threatening artistic freedom. In her contribution, Hanna Engelmeier deals with Kleist's The Betrothal in St. Domingo and asks how this text in all its harshness can be preserved for the teaching of literary studies.

“Bananen. Eine kleingedruckte Assoziation Europas,” by Danilo Scholz, in Zeitschrift für Ideengeschichte
That bureaucrats in Brussels prescribe the correct curvature of bananas has been a cherished urban legend aimed at exposing the regulatory zeal of European authorities. Yet looking beyond clichéd EU skepticism, Danilo Scholz shows how bananas have indeed played a central role in the history of European self-understanding, especially with respect to former colonies.
